The fashion event of the year (next to NYFW) finally came and definitely did not disappoint! The 2019 Met Gala was nothing less than show-stopping, jaw-dropping, and EXTRAVAGANT.
If you aren’t aware of the Met Gala or Costume Institute Gala is an annual fundraising event that invites some of fashion’s most important icons to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, NY. Each year there is a theme of the gala which usually coordinates with the theme of the exhibit that’s being unveiled within the museum. This year’s theme was CAMP. Not like, gather on roun’ the campfire and sing our campfire song camp. Well then, what’s camp?
According to Harper’s Bazaar: The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.
So, when you think CAMP, think 1970-80s Black Drag Queen, think over the top red carpet looks from Madonna and Lady Gaga. Got the vision? NOW let’s dissects my most and least favorite looks from this year.
For this theme, I had to place my own fashion preferences to the side and realize that these avant-garde like looks are more ART than they are functional.
Of course, we start with the Queen of walking, Naomi Campbell in Valentino’s lavender gown and ostrich feather cape.
Zendaya lit up the runway, quite literally in her Tommy Hilfiger gown. In a Cinderella-inspired gown, Zendaya traveled down the red carpet as her fairy-god stylist placed a spell and her dress lit up.
Las Vegas called. Kendall Jenner’s Versace dress is probably one of my gala looks. Is it safe, HOWEVER, sis knows what’s good for her and what’s not; and this, this is good.
Janelle Monae can literally do no wrong. Not only did she stay on brand with her black and white aesthetic but she STILL stuck to the theme and gave us an over the top (hat) look. Thank you Christian Siriano and Janelle Monae.
Now, these next few were better off…staying home.
Who do you think slayed?
From one millennial to another,
Thank you @IAMFASHION for the pictures and live tweets during the gala!
